Our Achievements

Find out about how we have been addressing the skills challenges in Essex
ESB jobs fair 2017

The ESB has been working hard to deliver change and address the skills challenges that exist across Essex.

Here are just some of our achievements over the last few years:

  • We've created and distributed our Careers 'Whats Your Thing Guide' to 20,000 young people and 100 schools across Essex, Southend-On-Sea and Thurrock. This resource has been created to provide young people in Essex with careers information that will help them to understand the opportunities that exist in our priority sectors.

"I would just like to say how wonderful I think your, 'what's your thing?', guide is. It was sent to my 14yr old son, but it's been a tremendous help to my 18yr old daughter. Whilst at sixth form currently studying Art, she has been feeling the enormous pressure of what she should do next, and most of all what she can do that incorporates her art through a job title. Your guide is a lovely layout of what is actually out there, and the section about art has really given her the hope that there is something out there for her. With also the sections that tell you the actual work places to do with each jobs in the area is just great." - Essex Parent

  • Through our sector action groups and programmes we have established a network of more than 150 businesses enabling us to be a leading  employer voice. We have used this voice to; influence how European Structural Investment Funds are spent; contribute to the post-16 education and training area reviews; lobby government to give first hand experiences of failures in the skills system to meet employer needs.
  • In the last year we have worked with more than 30 schools and 800 students through our Education and Industry STEM Programme, delivering 44 activities to enthuse and excite young people about careers in our priority sectors through:

    • Industry Taster Days
    • Masterclasses
    • Mentoring
    • Competitions

  • Influenced local training providers to deliver new and enhanced qualifications to support skills delivery in our key sectors. We have achieved this by producing our free Skills Evidence Base and by providing grant funding to recruit new staff or train existing staff through our Golden Hello programme.

  • Delivered CPD to more than 20 tutors to enhance their teaching capability.

“Visiting Raytheon Systems in Harlow gave me a comforting insight into how the industry are supporting the work we do as college tutors. The CPD event gave me a good understanding of how the industry has changed and how we can implement changes within the college to provide the next generation of engineers.” - Robert McGowan, Senior Tutor in Advanced Manufacturing, Harlow College

  • Launched the Essex Enterprise Adviser Network, which has 41 Enterprise Advisers from 38 different Essex businesses working with more than 25 schools across Essex.  The EAN has led to many exciting activities taking place, including students being offered work experience from companies such as Morgan Sindall and Billericay IT Solutions, confidence building workshops, application, CV writing and mock interview days and apprenticeship opportunities.
