Earlier this month (May 2017), our Education & Industry STEM Programme held a Built Environment Workshop with South Essex College (SEC) at their Southend campus, to promote skills and career opportunities in construction.
Nearly 80 students from four schools joined in with the event; participating on the day were: FitzWimarc School, Basildon Lower Academy, Shenfield High School and Woodlands High School. The students rotated around sessions led by industry members to try their hand at a wide range of interactive projects and learn about the sector.
Lakehouse Plc held a tower building project where students would use 'STIXX' construction toys to create their models. The students learnt about the different processes involved in a large construction project, as well as the importance of accurate building.
Students worked with Anderson Group and Morgan Sindall on a planning and plotting activity, which explained some of the non-trade based functions within construction and also allowed them to gain a more diverse opinion of some of the roles within the sector.
We would like to thank all of our industry members for helping create such an inspirational and exciting event for our students, we would also like to thank all of the schools who took part, and SEC for hosting the day.
